RIM Digital Music Sdn Bhd (“RDM”), established primarily to enable commercial music users in Malaysia to conveniently obtain a collective licence to reproduce and store digital copies of sound, music video and/or karaoke recordings of authorising RIM members (“the Recordings”) in lieu of conventional CDs, VCDs and DVDs for the purpose of public performance at physical premises.
Effective 1 January 2011, RDM will be responsible for the issuance of licences and collection of royalties for such reproduction usage of the Recordings in place of Public Performance Malaysia Sdn Bhd (“PPM”) which will continue its traditional role of collectively licensing the public performance, broadcast and commercial rental of the Recordings since its incorporation in 1988.
With the formation of RDM and streamlining of its nationwide operations, RIM is confident of providing widespread, affordable access to copyrighted music content to meet the evolving licensing needs of commercial music users whilst returning fair value to its members moving forward. Both RDM and PPM are wholly-owned subsidiaries of RIM and also Licensing Bodies within the meaning of the Malaysian Copyright Act of 1987.
Combining the above with its various industry development and anti-piracy enforcement programmes, RIM will be increasing its efforts to firmly promote awareness of and respect for copyright in the Recordings and consequently encourage a dynamic and sustainable music culture for all stakeholders.
RIM is the national trade association for the recorded music industry with membership of over 180 locally incorporated companies and businesses involved in the production, manufacturing and distribution of local and international recordings which account for over 95% of the legitimate music market in Malaysia.
